Badgingarra Primary School

New for 2009

Hello to all

"The goal of education is the advancement of knowledge and the dissemination of truth."

JIM’S SPOT

People will have noticed over the period of time that I have been at Badgingarra that I try to make mention of how you can help your child improve in various aspects of their education.  Reading is one area that parents can and do have a major influence.  By reading with your children you are both modeling and showing that you value reading.  You can encourage reading in a variety of ways.  Simply by sharing a book with the younger children is one way, by posing questions to older children so that they have to research is another.  One popular way to encourage reading is through the MS Readathon programme.  This programme encourages children to read a number of books in a set period of time with parent/guardian supervision.  It is a fundraiser for the MS organization and as such, as we always say in regards to community events, we are not endorsing this particular programme but you might want to look at the website www.msreadathon.org.au

This year in our reports you will notice that there are only comments in English and Mathematics as well as a general comment.  This is in line with the directions of the Department of Education and Training.  Naturally if you would like more detail you are welcome to come to school and discuss your child’s progress.  I would in fact encourage this so that the formal report becomes an endorsement of what you already know.

We are going to trial a change during the break for lunch until the end of term when we will conduct a further review.

We have noted that several children are not eating their lunch properly as they are desperate to get out to play, so we are going to trial that at 12:15, when the children are dismissed for their lunch break, the children from Years 2-7 go straight to play for 25 minutes first and then have the children return to class and eat their lunch.  (This will not be for the K/P/1 class as they will be supervised by Miss Maroni and eat their lunch as normal.)  Naturally if your child is hungry they will be permitted to eat during the play session but when the bell is rung they will be required to go back to the classroom with their fellow students.  I stress that this is a trial in the hope that it will improve the eating habits of the children.

I also take this opportunity to remind parents that Sip and Crunch is a time to eat fruit and sip water.  It is not supposed to be a time to eat cake, biscuits or packets of chips nor consume juice packs.  I realize that I cannot demand this as your child’s diet is your responsibility, however I do ask that you try to conform to the intentions that are to encourage healthy eating and drinking.

We are all looking forward to participating in the Drama Festival at Dandaragan this coming Friday.  At the moment we have only been able to secure the service of one bus so if you are intending to attend the drama festival yourself you may wish to help us out by providing the transport for your child/children.  Please let us know if you are able to assist.

We are also looking forward to the Winter Sports Interschool Carnival next Friday (19th June).  We will be playing soccer, hockey and netball at the Badgingarra Oval from 10:15am through to 2:00pm.  Please come along and support the children.  You may even be able to assist in an umpiring role in one of the sports.  (EG Netball or Soccer please)
